Speaker 1:

Hello and welcome to Rose's Astro Academy, where we demystify the system of astrology piece by piece. This week for our transit talk, we're taking a look at Mercury's entrance into Scorpio. Mercury entered Scorpio around 4 pm on October 13th Eastern Time and will remain in Scorpio until November 3rd. So we'll spend some time discussing how Mercury tends to act in the sign of Scorpio and what expressions we might be seeing individually and in the collective as a result, in terms of Mercury's phase dynamic with the Sun. Mercury is moving out from under the beams of the Sun as an evening star, so we'll break that down a bit as well, and we'll also talk about Mars's placement in Cancer and how that puts a different spin on this expression, because Mars is the ruler of Scorpio. So that's the agenda for today. Let's start by taking a look at what Mercury tends to rule generally. Mercury tends to speak to the areas of communication, writing, intellect, thought, travel and commerce. When Mercury is in the sign of Scorpio, we can think of Mercury like being a guest in the home of Mars. In ancient astrology, mars was said to rule Scorpio, which basically means that we can think of Scorpio as the home, abode or temple of Mars. So Mercury has come to spend some time in Mars's temple, and when we're staying as a guest in someone else's home, we tend to take on more of their customs. We will eat the types of food that they eat and partake in the activities that they do for leisure and pleasure, etc. So when a planet is a guest in the home of another planet, it takes on a lot of the qualities of that planet, but with its own spin. So one way that we can start to think about Mercury and Scorpio is by looking at the archetypal combination of Mars and Mercury. However, that's not the whole picture, because Mars has two homes in the zodiac. All of the planets except the sun and moon have two homes in the zodiac, two signs that they rule, and Mars's two homes are very different from one another. So we have to take that into account too.

Speaker 1:

How Scorpio is unique here. Scorpio is fixed, watery and feminine, which is an interesting combination for Mars, because we typically think of Mars as a planet that is very fiery and very masculine. In Scorpio we tend to see another side of Mars qualities, and it's these specific qualities that Mercury is going to be most embodying. So Mars is represented by Ares, the god of war, known for fighting and being a warrior, but in Scorpio the fighting looks more like defending and protecting.

Speaker 1:

Scorpio is deep and penetrating. It likes to get to the heart of the matter. It's concerned with what has been repressed and the dark sides of life and the occult realms. When we combine this energy with Mercury, the mind, the intellect what often comes through and this is often true for people born with Mercury in Scorpio as well is a love of deep research, a really penetrating mind and perhaps expressing things that are more evocative, also studying things like occult matters.

Speaker 1:

Now for Mercury's current visit in Scorpio. We also combine where Mars is currently in the sky. So Mars is in the sign of Cancer, and this will put a very different spin on this expression as well, because Mars is actually said to be in his fall in Cancer, which is basically saying that he's in a sign that's very opposite to his own archetypal nature when we're thinking about Mercury's current expression in Scorpio, because Mercury does visit Scorpio every year, but it tends to look a bit different year to year and a big part of that difference is going to depend on where Mars is currently located in the sky and how Mars is expressing because of that. So Mars is currently in Cancer, which is another water sign. So one way we can think about this is that it will be heightening the water element here of Scorpio, so we could have heightened emotions here and a process of really introspecting and really deep diving into one's mind and maybe sorting through that inner emotional realm. Remember, mercury is a big symbol for the mind and Scorpio is already a sign that has a lot to do with that internal emotional processing and things that are going on beneath the surface of the psyche. When I think of Scorpio I tend to think of a big lake that's very deep and it looks very calm on top of the water. But there's a lot and a lot and a lot of stuff going on beneath the surface and with Mars currently in Cancer, that watery element to Scorpio is definitely getting dialed up even more.

Speaker 1:

What's also coming to mind for me when I think about this combination in the sky of Mars in Cancer and Mercury in Scorpio is that Mars in Cancer is very much about advocating for the vulnerable and standing up on behalf of those who maybe aren't able to stand up for themselves. So with Mercury entering the mix here, there is perhaps going to be a collective bend towards doing some deep research on some vulnerable sectors of our population or other populations. For example, I could see some internet sleuths getting to the bottom of some injustices here or bringing those injustices to light through some research that they've been doing. Mercury in Scorpio can also be very evocative in its communication, wanting to cause disruption. For example, eminem has Mercury in Scorpio a very, very good example of the very evocative nature of his music and his way of communicating. But with Mars currently in Cancer, we can see that being bent towards advocating. Maybe we're seeing evocative discourse in the collective, but it's around advocating for something.

Speaker 1:

Another thing that comes to mind for me with this combination is that Mars in Cancer can have a sense of weakness or feeling inept, or feeling not strong enough or capable enough. As I said, mars is like that warrior energy inside of us that wants to feel really capable and like they have it together and like they're able to do things independently. But Mars was said to be in its fall in Cancer, so it's almost like that script can get flipped, where now the story that Mars is telling is that, oh, actually we're not capable enough in some area and it's a process of working through that. So, with Mars kind of giving us that storyline through his placement in Cancer and Mercury, the intellect going into a Mars ruled sign, that has a lot to do with deep diving I can see us maybe compensating for those feelings of not being capable enough by perhaps doing a lot of research and learning on a specific topic for these few weeks while Mercury is in Scorpio. It can be a very good way to utilize this energy actually is to consciously allow yourself to intellectually rabbit hole into an area that you'd like to focus on and build more competence in.

Speaker 1:

Another thing I see with this combination of Mars in Cancer and Mercury in Scorpio would be processing one's feelings of sadness, of anger, of grief, that inner emotional intensity. Processing that perhaps through poetry that is maybe a little dark, a little erotic, a little evocative, or perhaps listening to deep, dark, intense music, watching dark movies such as horror films or things like that, and just generally engaging in these dark motifs through writing, through making art, through consuming other people's art, whether that's paintings, whether that's movies, whether that's music, etc. And doing that in order to process these emotions. With Scorpio there tends to be a quality of fixation. With Mercury representing the mind, scorpio often represents that which has been repressed and that which is ready to go through a process of transformation and re-emerge. So with Mercury in Scorpio, there can be a fixation on that which has been repressed in the psyche and bringing those things to the surface.

Speaker 1:

With Mars currently in Cancer, maybe we've been repressing a lot of our anger, for example, and we need to purge that in some way, like I just mentioned, maybe by creating or consuming art some way. That's healthy, of course, and be careful for this repressed perhaps anger or other repressed aspects to not come out in sneaky ways Again. That evocative communication of Mercury can be a little sharp if directed towards other people. Especially with Mars currently in Cancer. We have a large propensity for passive aggression and sneak manipulations and things like that. So just be careful that you're not getting caught up in those types of things as an outlet for your anger. You're not getting caught up in those types of things as an outlet for your anger.

Speaker 1:

Other things we can see would be curiosity around topics like the occult and looking at the dark underbelly of things. I don't know if you ever had that experience as a kid or as an adult. You're in the woods and there's a big rock, not too big, but like a large enough rock that it's heavy when you pick it up. And you pick it up and the underside is just squirming with all of these gross insects. That's kind of what Mercury and Scorpio likes to do is like. Hmm, I wonder what's beneath the surface of this and I'm curious to actually dive into the deep, dark underbelly of things. So you know, I know that true crime is such a huge genre these days for some reason. So that's a very Mercury and Scorpio thing that we could see getting really dialed up over the next few weeks. Again, it is a relatively quick period of time. We also have Venus in Scorpio right now, who rules the arts, so I can really see this coming about collectively in the arts for us, just more of those dark, intense Scorpionic themes. Other things that we could see coming up in the collective would be investigative journalism, uncovering secrets which strike at the places where we are vulnerable, with Mars and cancer. That has a lot to do with the places that we feel vulnerable. Collective discourses around taboo topics, manipulative tactics in the media or politics. We could see intensified and evocative discourses leading up to the elections. Especially, mercury in Scorpio is also very strategic, like the military strategist archetype. So there could be a lot of things brewing in the background that we don't really hear about collectively, but that are going on behind the scenes.

Speaker 1:

Mercury is currently in the process of what we call rising out from under the beams of the sun, which is that when a planet gets too close in its transit to the sun, it actually goes invisible in the sky for a while, and I'll break that down more in a future episode, but for now what's important to know is that when a planet rises out from under the beams, it's becoming visible again after a long time of not being visible, and this was said to be a very important moment for that planet. The planet was said to gain a lot of strength at this time, and then also the topics that this planet represents will stand out much more in the collective. Mercury is in his evening star phase, which means that he's currently setting after the sun sets, and this would be opposed to the morning star phase, which would be when he rises before the sun rises. So the morning versus evening star gives Mercury a different flavor as well. As an evening star, mercury is much more reflective and contemplative, so especially with the dual water nature that we have going on here with Scorpio and Cancer and water signs are also really about that internal processing. I see Mercury's evening star phase as just dialing up that introspection process, that process of really going within, plunging within one's psyche, maybe just really reflecting on where we're at in our lives right now and bringing in that military strategist archetype to create some really nice plans for ourselves.

Speaker 1:

Mercury in Scorpio can be really good at that as well. Personally, I'm really looking forward to this energy to do some intellectual deep diving on an area where I've been feeling a bit of a lack of With that Mars in Cancer. It's very much about noticing an area that we're lacking competence in. So that's kind of how I see this archetypal flavor panning out for me personally. Anyways, this has been a bit of my thoughts on Mercury entering Scorpio. There's been a bigger emphasis on how Mars in Cancer changes things for Mercury in Scorpio this time around, so I hope you enjoyed it, as always.
